How a ceramic birthday works

For any group of adults. No experience needed: you start at the very beginning and there's a teacher looking after every piece for the whole three hours.

  1. You arrive, put on your aprons and everyone takes a place. The studio is yours for the three hours and you don't share it with any class.

  2. We start with hand-building: pinch, coil and slab, the three ways of making a piece without a wheel. That's enough for your first piece.

  3. And anyone who wants to can sit down at the wheel. It's what people ask for most, and the hardest thing to imagine until it's in front of you: centring the clay, opening it up and raising the walls with a teacher beside you.

  4. Each piece is decorated with textures, stamps and the studio's range of colours.

  5. Halfway through there's a break for whatever you've brought: cake, vermouth, anything. We provide the space.

  6. We keep the pieces to dry, fire and glaze them, and let you know when they're ready to collect.

Where it happens

A real ceramics studio, with its wheels, kilns and shelves full of waiting pieces. During the birthday it's yours and isn't shared with any class.

Included

  • The three hours with the whole studio for your group.
  • A studio teacher with you from start to finish.
  • Hand-building, plus the wheel for anyone who wants to try it.
  • The clay, tools, moulds and stamps.
  • The range of colours to decorate the pieces.
  • Professional firing and glazing of every piece.
  • An apron and a workspace for everyone.
  • The space to eat, raise a toast and blow out the candles.

Not included

  • Food and drink. You bring those, and that's absolutely fine.
  • Decorations, if you'd like some. You can bring those too.
  • Shipping the pieces. They're collected from the studio when they're ready.

You bring

  • Clothes that can get dirty. The wheel leaves you with clay up to your elbows.
  • Short nails help a lot on the wheel, but they're not compulsory.
  • Whatever you'd like to eat and drink.

What everyone takes home

One piece per person: a mug, a bowl, a plate or a plant pot. Everyone makes theirs during the 3 hours and decorates it however they like.

It doesn't go home that day: the clay has to dry, be fired at over a thousand degrees, be glazed and go back in the kiln. We do all of that and it's included in the price. We'll let you know when the pieces are ready to collect, about 20 days later.

Frequently asked questions

Between 5 and 10. Five is the minimum for the event to go ahead and ten is how many fit comfortably in the studio, with room for everyone and a teacher looking after you all.

Yes, and it's what people ask for most. You start with hand-building, which is where your first piece comes from, and then anyone who wants to sits down at the wheel with a teacher beside them. You don't need to have done it before.

Yes. We take a break halfway through for whatever you've brought, whether that's cake, vermouth or a few beers. You bring the food and drink; we provide the space.

Usually at the weekend. Weekday mornings are possible too, if the studio has a free slot. We arrange it when you book: write to us with the date you have in mind and we'll tell you if it's available.

It's 40 euros per person, all included: the clay, tools, colours, the three hours with a teacher, the wheel, and the firing and glazing of every piece. With the minimum of 5 people that's 200 euros; with 10, it's 400.

You leave a 30% deposit to hold the date and pay the rest on the day. The date isn't booked until we have the deposit, because the studio can't teach anyone else that day.

No, and it's worth knowing beforehand: the clay has to dry, be fired at over a thousand degrees, be glazed and go back in the kiln. We do all of that and it's included. The pieces are ready to collect about 20 days later, and we'll let you know when they are.

It does, and it's organised the same way. Write to us and tell us what you want to celebrate and how many of you there are, and we'll talk it over.

Why celebrate a birthday at a ceramics studio

The list of adult birthday plans in Barcelona is always the same and always ends up at a table: a lunch, a few beers, a long dinner. That's fine, and it's exactly the same as last year. What changes at a studio is that for three hours everyone is doing something with their hands, and that breaks through polite small talk far better than a wine list.

The wheel helps with that more than you'd think. It's genuinely hard the first few times, so the clay goes off-centre, the piece collapses, someone gets it on the third try and everyone else laughs. At the end of the afternoon everyone takes home something they made, with their fingerprints on it, and that lasts a good deal longer than the photos.

And it's a plan you don't have to organise. The studio is kept for your group, the materials are set out, there's a teacher on hand, and all you bring is whatever you want to eat.

How it's organised

First, the date. It's usually at the weekend, and weekday mornings are possible if the studio has a free slot. Since the whole studio is given over to your group, that slot is no longer available for classes, so it's held with a 30% deposit and the rest is paid on the day.

Then, how many of you there are. The minimum is 5 people and the maximum 10, which is how many fit comfortably, with wheels for anyone who wants one. If there are more of you, write to us anyway and we'll talk it over.

On the day, you arrive with whatever you want to eat and drink, and nothing else. At the end we keep the pieces to fire and glaze them, and we'll let you know when they're ready to collect, about twenty days later.

It doesn't have to be a birthday

The format is the same for any group that wants to celebrate something: a hen do, a team lunch, an anniversary or just an afternoon with friends for no particular reason. What defines a ceramic birthday isn't the occasion, it's that the studio is yours and everyone leaves with their own piece.

If what you have in mind is a company activity with more people than fit, write to us anyway: sometimes it can be done in two sittings or some other way.

If you have a date in mind, tell us and we'll call you. And if it's a child's birthday, have a look at the children's ceramic birthday.
