Ceramics workshops

One Saturday morning, two hours and a piece of your own to take home. You don't need to know anything about ceramics or sign up to anything, and everything's provided: the clay, the tools, the colours and the kiln.

What a workshop is, and how it differs from a class

A class at the studio is part of a plan: you come every week, work on whatever you have on the go and gradually build your skills. A workshop is the opposite: one self-contained morning with a beginning and an end. You arrive knowing nothing and leave with a piece made.

That's why you don't need any experience or commitment. You're only signing up for that Saturday, and everything's in the price: the clay, the tools, the colours and — this is what people ask about most — the firing and glazing of your piece, which is the part you can't do at home.

Places are limited on purpose. On the wheel there are as many as there are wheels, and in hand-building as many as can work comfortably at the big table: that means someone can keep an eye on every piece for the full two hours, which is exactly why a person who has never touched clay ends up making something.

Nobody takes their piece home the same day. The clay has to dry, be fired at over a thousand degrees, be glazed and go back in the kiln; that takes about three weeks and we do it all. We'll let you know when it's ready so you can come and collect it.

Lots of people come with someone — as a couple, with a friend, with their mum — and it's also one of the gifts we're asked for most. You can book several places on the same date in one go.
