What we'll do in 2 hours

For anyone. The wheel looks hard from the outside, but it's not so hard with someone guiding you: most people arrive thinking they won't manage it and leave with two pieces.

  1. We start with the ABCs of the wheel: how to sit, how to centre the clay and why that's half the work.

  2. You practise pulling up the wall and opening the piece, which is where mugs, bowls and plates come from.

  3. You throw as much as you have time for and at the end you choose your two favourite pieces: those are the ones that stay.

  4. You decorate them with more than fifteen colours, or leave them in the natural tone of the white clay, which looks lovely too.

What gets made here

Pieces made in past workshops, by people who had never touched clay before.

And then, pulling up the wall
Opening the centre with your fingers

Glazed in the studio's colours
The throwing marks are left on show

Included

  • The full two hours, with a teacher beside your wheel.
  • White pottery clay, as much as you use.
  • A wheel all to yourself for the full two hours.
  • More than fifteen colours to decorate your pieces.
  • Professional firing and glazing of both pieces.
  • An apron and a towel.

Not included

  • Extra pieces. You take two home: that's what there's time to finish and fire, and the rest of the clay goes back in the bucket to be recycled.
  • Delivery. You collect your pieces from the studio when they're ready.

Bring with you

  • Clothes that can get dirty and that you don't mind getting wet: the wheel splashes.
  • Short nails. This one really matters: with long nails the clay catches and the wall breaks.
  • Your hair tied back if it's long.

What you take home

You take home two pieces: a mug, a bowl or a plate. You make them yourself during the workshop and decorate them however you like.

You don't take them home that day: the clay has to dry, be fired at over a thousand degrees, be glazed and go back in the kiln. We do all of that and it's included in the price. We'll let you know when they're ready to collect, about 20 days later.

50 €, all included

The 2 hours, the clay, the tools, the colours, and the firing and glazing of your pieces. You pay the full amount here, so there's nothing else to bring on the day of the workshop.

Once you've paid, the place is in your name and you'll get an email with the date, the address and what to bring. By card or Bizum.

Choose your date

If you're coming with someone, choose two or more and book them all in one go.

Frequently asked questions

That's what everyone asks. It's hard to master, yes, but that's not what you do in two hours: what you do is centre the clay and pull up a piece with someone guiding your hands, and practically everyone manages that. Most people arrive convinced they won't be able to and leave with two pieces.

Two, whichever you choose from everything you throw. That's what there's time to finish properly and fire. The rest of the clay goes back in the bucket and gets recycled, so you can try as many times as you like, guilt-free.

In about 20 days. The pieces have to dry, be fired, be glazed and go back in the kiln, and we do all of that: it's included in the price. We'll write to you as soon as they're ready.

Because that's how many wheels there are, and you can't share a wheel: each person needs their own for the full two hours. It's not a sales tactic and it can't be increased.

Write to us at least 24 hours in advance and we'll move you to another date if there's room, or you can give your place to anyone you like. With less than 24 hours' notice we can't move it or refund you: there are six wheels, and by then yours would just sit idle.

Yes. The wheel splashes liquid clay and you'll end up with it all over your hands, arms and apron. Wear clothes that can get dirty and don't worry about the rest: it's one trip through the washing machine and it's part of the fun.

About this technique, and about coming on a Saturday

What the potter's wheel is, and why it looks harder than it is

The potter's wheel is a spinning plate on which you build a piece, using that spin. It's not a machine that does the shaping: your hands do that, and all the wheel does is make the wall rise evenly on every side, so you don't have to keep turning the piece round.

The scary step is the first one: centring. It means pushing the ball of clay towards the axis until it stops wobbling, and it depends more on sitting well and bracing your elbows than on being strong. With someone beside you correcting your posture, you'll get it in the first ten minutes, and from there the rest is a matter of practice.

There are two things the wheel won't forgive, and we warn you about both in the workshop: dry hands — the clay always has to be slippery — and long nails, which catch the wall from the inside and break it just as the piece was starting to go well.

Try the potter's wheel in Barcelona without signing up to anything

Almost everyone who wants to try the wheel runs into the same thing: courses lasting several months, with a sign-up fee and a fixed schedule. This workshop exists for exactly the opposite — one Saturday from ten to twelve, you pay for that morning and that's it. If you get hooked, we can talk about a plan; if you were just curious, you'll have your answer and two finished pieces.

It takes place at Gede Studio, in Santa Eulàlia, L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, on the edge of Barcelona and a short walk from the metro. You'll find the exact address and the stops on this website.

There are six places per date because there are six wheels, and each person needs their own for the two hours. That means someone can keep an eye on every piece and nobody spends the morning watching someone else throw.

Wheel or hand-building? Which to choose

They're two different ways of doing the same thing and the studio teaches both, so the question always comes up. The short answer: the wheel gives you round pieces with thin, even walls, and it's harder at first; hand-building gives you pieces with more character, with whatever you can think of stuck on top, and it works first time.

If what you fancy is the image of clay spinning between your hands — which is what most people picture when they think of ceramics — go for the wheel. If you want to make a chick, a little mushroom house or a mug with someone's face on it, go for hand-building: you can't make those things on the wheel.

And if you're coming with someone who can't decide, it's fine to split up: the two aren't always on the same Saturday, but the dates for both workshops are on this website and you can book them separately.

There are places left on 2 dates. Book yours.
